Online Master of Arts in teaching receives Outstanding Program Award

Submitted by Ashley Nietfeld

The online Master of Arts in teaching program, designed for working professionals to transition to teaching, has received the 2022 University and Professional Continuing Education Association Central Region Outstanding Program Award.

The Master of Arts in teaching enables graduate students to earn a master's degree in teaching in 12 or 18 months. The program combines online coursework with clinical classroom experience at an accredited elementary or high school, allowing students to participate from anywhere in the U.S and world. The 18-month program allows participants to work in a school with a one-year provisional license and earn a salary while completing coursework.

"We have created and Global Campus has delivered this high-quality, intensive online program that is meeting the working adults who have decided to change careers," said Debbie Mercer, dean of the College of Education. "This is a powerful partnership and we are doubly honored that our Master of Arts in teaching degree graduates the most students each year."

This award recognizes an outstanding credit, noncredit, alternative credential or training program. Programs are evaluated on a number of factors, including cost-effectiveness, longevity, innovation, diversity, quality and contribution to professional, continuing and online education.

Karen Pedersen, dean of Global Campus, said her team is equally appreciative of the award.

"We were excited to work with the College of Education to put forward this nomination," Pedersen said. "The growth of this program is unparalleled and demonstrates why it was the clear winner in this category."

This year's UPCEA Central Region conference was Sept. 28-30 in Columbus, Ohio. The association exists to provide support to its members through professional networking opportunities, best-practice insights and publications.
