Celebrate the freedom to read at Banned Books Week events

Submitted by Cailin Riley

Join K-State Libraries this week for several events in recognition of Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Typically celebrated during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information.

This week's events include:

  • Banned Book Read-Aloud, noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday,  Sept. 20, at the Morris Family Multicultural Student Center.
Join a celebration of the freedom to read! Students, faculty and staff are invited to read a selection from their favorite banned book or just come and listen to others.

  • Banned Book Club: "Little House on the Prairie," 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Manhattan Brewing Company.
Come join Tara Coleman and Amber Johnson as they discuss the September Banned Book, "Little House on the Prairie" by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

  • Banned Books Week Panel Discussion, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in 181 Hale Library.
Join a community discussion about banned books, censorship and the freedom to read.

  • Banned Book Club: "All Boys Aren't Blue," 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at The Dusty Bookshelf.
Join a book discussion about Banned Books Week Honorary Chair George M. Johnson's "All Boys Aren't Blue." Whether you've read the whole book or just a few pages, we hope you'll join us for this community discussion.

  • Banned Book Read-Aloud, noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Morris Family Multicultural Student Center.
Join a celebration of the freedom to read! Students, faculty and staff are invited to read a selection from their favorite banned book or just come and listen to others.

All events are free and open to the public. Banned Books Week at K-State is sponsored by the department of English, K-State Libraries, Sigma Tau Delta and the Children's and Adolescent Literature Community student organization. If you have any questions, please contact Dan Ireton
