Four K-State students to be panelists at AAUW's International Women's Day Celebration

Submitted by Tresa Landis

The Manhattan Branch of AAUW invites you to join in a virtual celebration of International Women's Day at 7 p.m. Monday, March 7. International Women's Day is a global event recognizing and honoring the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. To encourage all to work toward a gender-equal world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, this year's theme is #BreakTheBias.

To increase our individual understanding and appreciation of the diversity within our local community, five women panelists from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, China and the United States with close ties to Manhattan will address their unique perspectives and personal experiences with bias and discrimination.

Event speakers are Sri Lanka native Nadeeshani Ratnayaka, who is working on a Master of Science in apparel and textiles; Taiwo Bamidele, a doctoral student in apparel and textiles whose home country is Nigeria; Pingping Chen, a native of China and a doctoral candidate in industrial and manufacturing engineering; Kansas-born Natalie Duling Hamilton, who is working toward a master's in music with an emphasis in music education and curriculum; and Palwasha Yousofi from Afghanistan, who lived in Manhattan several years and now lives in Texas. Ratnayaka, Bamidele, Chen and Duling are also recipients of AAUW K-State scholarships.

AAUW recognizes Barbara Rees and the League of Women Voters as Diamond Level sponsors of this year's event.

Everyone is welcome to attend the virtual meeting. To request an IWD event link contact manhattanksaauw@gmail.com. For more information about AAUW visit manhattan-ks.aauw.net and facebook.com/AAUW.Manhattan.
