Undergraduate Mathematics Seminar: 'What's An Actuary?'

Roger Offerman, senior vice president and chief actuary at Security Benefit in Topeka, will speak in the Undergraduate Mathematics Seminar on "What's An Actuary?" from 1:30-2:20 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, in 122 Cardwell Hall. 

This talk will cover the topics of what an actuary does, where actuaries work and live, an overview of the actuarial exam process, classes at K-State that can help prepare you for actuarial exams, and company-sponsored actuarial exam and study programs. The intended focus is to provide an overview of the actuarial profession and a roadmap to obtaining an actuarial designation. Understanding the actuarial science profession, what actuaries do all day and an introduction to the actuarial professional examination.

Offermann has worked at Security Benefit since 1995 and previously worked at Nationwide Life Insurance in Columbus, Ohio, before coming to Security Benefit. He has a Bachelor of Science in secondary education — math and music — Concordia University Seward, Nebraska, and a Master of Science in applied mathematics, University of Missouri, Columbia.
