Economics Club to host roundtable on the future of K-State Athletics

Submitted by Daniel Kuester

The Economics Club, a registered departmental student organization, will host a roundtable at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, about "The Future of K-State Athletics and the Big 12 Conference." The discussion will take place in 328 Waters Hall and on Zoom. This event will be preceded by a club business meeting at 6:30 p.m.

While the Big 12 Conference announced plans for its future on Sept. 10 by adding BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF as future members, there is plenty to discuss about the future of college athletics. What do the recent changes to name, image and likeness mean for Big 12 athletic departments? How much longer will Oklahoma and Texas compete in the Big 12? Do we expect more Big 12 expansion in the future? Would that be wise? Our panelists will provide their thoughts on these questions and more.

We will briefly provide a history of Big 12 athletics and try to explain why we are facing this current situation. We plan on having a discussion among our roundtable participants but also will have plenty of time for questions and discussion with the audience.

The roundtable consists of Tim Fitzgerald, publisher of GoPowercat.com; Vahe Gregorian of the Kansas City Star; Daniel Kuester, director of undergraduate studies of the economics department at K-State; and Andrew Maness, formerly of the Richmond Federal Reserve and current technical director at Rho AI.

While we should have enough seats for everyone, it is best to RSVP to Kuester at dkuester@k-state.edu if you plan on attending in person just to ensure we have available seats. Obviously, this is not necessary if you are attending on Zoom.
