Safe Zone to host advanced workshop 'The Art of the Talking/Healing Circle'
Safe Zone, in the Department of Diversity and Multicultural Student Affairs, invites you to participate in the Safe Zone Advanced Workshop, "The Art of the Talking/Healing Circle," from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in person at Room 204 at the Morris Family Multicultural Student Center.
When we cultivate spaces of belonging, we see equitable representation at the table, and we hear the voices of those from historically underrepresented and excluded populations.
Why healing circles? Adopted from Native American traditions, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation promotes healing circles as part of Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation. Healing circles focus on conversation as a means toward emotional healing to address inequities linked to historic and contemporary beliefs in a hierarchy of human value. In these healing circles, we will build on the momentum of personal and shared dialogue that advances equity and belonging.

Safe Zone continues to be part of Kansas State University's efforts to create an open and affirming campus since the 1970s. The architects of Safe Zone created educational opportunities to teach about discrimination around sexual orientation and other minoritized identities. The expanded Safe Zone created a more comprehensive and ever-evolving effort to fit the needs of current K-State community members. Safe Zone Allies acknowledge a variety of backgrounds and identities while teaching about navigating exclusionary acts like intimidation, micro and macro aggressions, discrimination, LGBTQ-related concerns, and sexual violence.
