Education faculty and administrators present at national conference

Submitted by Patrice Scott

Several faculty members in the College of Education presented virtually at the recent Association of Teacher Educators' annual conference.

Debbie Mercer, dean of the college, Todd Goodson, assistant dean of teacher education, and Tonnie Martinez, director of the Office of Innovation and Collaboration, presented "New Pathways for New Times."

They addressed three teacher licensure programs the Master of Arts in teaching; the online Bachelor of Science in elementary education; and the Kansas Statewide Teacher Education Pathway for Underserved and Place-bound, or K-STEP UP — and how they are meeting the needs of place-bound and underserved populations. Upon the conference's conclusion, it was announced the K-State College of Education won the Billy G. Dixon Distinguished Teacher Program Award for the development and administration of outstanding innovative programs.

Goodson co-presented "Leveraging the Potential of Automated Data Collection" with Frederick Burrack, Office of Assessment director and professor of music education, and Dorothy Thompson, Office of Assessment assistant director. They addressed using Canvas to collect student achievement data directly from course work and internship experiences.

Dustin Meritt and Tracy Conway, professors of practice, presented on their effort targeting K-State future teachers referred to as EDCATS. The title of their presentation was "Pre-Service Teacher Professional Development: 'EDCATS Live' Reaches All Preservice Teachers Through a Synchronous Virtual Experience." Merritt and Conway recounted facilitating our live talk show specifically for preservice teachers featuring education professionals, community members and guests.
