Shamir has had eight years of experience in the software and technology industry in various positions from programmer to chief technology officer. He completed a bachelor's degree in computer science from Tel Aviv University, a master's in the same discipline from Open University, and then a doctorate in computational science and engineering from Michigan Technological University. He did his postdoctoral work at the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health.

His research focus is data science and the application of data science methodology to data from a large number of disciplines. He also works on advancing inclusion in higher education, making it more accessible to underrepresented and underserved populations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, disciplines. He has received more than $5M in external funding, of which more than $2M was as principle investigator.

Shamir is primary author of nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications and a co-author of many more, many of them in tier-1 journals. He serves as a reviewer for more than 50 journals.
