Future teacher receives multicultural scholarship, technology award

Submitted by Patrice Scott

Doris Wright Carroll and Tori Mitchell

Tori Mitchell, sophomore in secondary education-social studies, is this year's recipient of a prestigious multicultural scholarship and technology award created for future teachers by K-State College of Education scholar and faculty member Doris Wright Carroll.

Mitchell is the 2018 recipient of the Doris Wright Carroll Multicultural Technology Award and the Lawrence G. Wright Scholarship, a fund created in honor of Carroll's father to celebrate his contributions to the field of diversity at Santa Fe Railroad. Carroll is an associate professor of special education, counseling and student affairs in the College of Education.

Carroll and her family created the Lawrence G. Wright Scholarship in 2002 and this award has been given to an undergraduate multicultural student every year since then. In 2011, Carroll enhanced the scholarship by establishing the Doris Wright Carroll Multicultural Technology Award, which provides the Lawrence G. Wright scholar with a new laptop to aid their academic pursuits.

Mitchell said she's already put her laptop to good use.

"I'm really appreciative of the scholarship, and I use the laptop all the time," Mitchell said. "My classes use Canvas so the homework is online and because the College of Education uses Mac products, it's so convenient because my laptop syncs up with my iPad. I even use it to take notes in class."

Carroll was delighted to learn Mitchell was selected, as the two served on a search committee in the summer. Mitchell is the eighth recipient of the award.

"Tori joins several other deserving students who have had their educations enhanced through the scholarship and technology award," Carroll said. "It is gratifying to learn of the many ways she is incorporating the laptop into her day."
