Faculty information meetings Nov. 8 to discuss Guatemala education abroad program

Submitted by Linda Yarrow

The food, nutrition, dietetics and health department will host information meetings for faculty about its education abroad program in Guatemala at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in 146 Justin Hall.

We will discuss dates of travel, Guatemala program partners, estimated costs, and benefits to students, faculty, and the Maya people.

The focus of the program is on service-learning to help the indigenous Maya people improve their quality of life. The program has a variable length of stay — six to 12 weeks — and there is an on-site K-State program manager to assist students while living, learning and serving in Guatemala.

Examples of service-learning opportunities include work in medical clinics, teach nutrition lessons all ages, assist a local Maya physician, assist with community garden programs, assist with clean water programs, present cooking classes, conduct community health assessments, develop physical activity programs, assist with disease prevention programs, tutor in English/computers/business skills, assist with housing improvements, teach financial skills and research opportunities.

Why consider this program for your students? Working and studying abroad makes students an active and engaged part of a global community. This experience can enhance job prospects and make students more competitive in an international economy, give them a broader outlook, and inspire personal and professional growth. Students will have opportunity to acquire and cultivate skills and make a positive difference in the lives of the indigenous Maya.
