Strategic Planning

Information technology has the potential to empower K-State students, faculty and staff to achieve their academic and career goals and the missions of our institution. In 2018, the university community began creating a vision and a plan for IT to align our efforts with K-State 2025. Our plan will guide our decisions and allocation of resources over the next 24 to 36 months.

Information gathering began in Spring 2018. IT contracted with the Plante Moran consulting firm to complete focus groups, interviews with senior administrators, and distribute a survey to campus in preparation for drafting the IT strategic plan. Sixteen leadership interviews and 19 focus group sessions were completed with 211 participants representing students, faculty and staff.

In late April, an IT survey was distributed to K-State students, faculty, staff and administration on all four campuses. A total of 1,290 individuals responded to the survey from the following classifications:

  • 42% undergraduate and graduate students 
  • 35% staff
  • 16% faculty
  • 4% university administration 
  • 3% other

Overall, information technology systems and services were rated favorably by all respondents. About 72% of the respondents agreed that the portfolio of IT services met their current needs in comparison to 51% who indicated that the IT portfolio will meet anticipated future needs (Table 1). Thirty-four percent of the respondents rated K-State average in comparison to other public research universities with regard to selection and adequacy of information technology solutions and information technology maturity and effectiveness. A draft copy of the focus group and survey results are provided by Plante Moran.
