DAS 525: Senior Research in International Studies

Students in DAS 525 create an interdisciplinary, international research project that reflects their work in their International and Area Studies courses.

DAS 525 projects reflect the learning goals of the International and Area Studies Secondary Major. These goals are:

--Demonstrate familiarity with a range of approaches to knowledge, research, and problem-solving

--Discuss current academic perspectives on international, global, and trans-cultural issues

--Construct logical and coherent research-based arguments to support analysis of international, global, and trans-cultural issues from a diversity of perspectives including international politics, cultural anthropology, and global geography

--Conduct research in a way that demonstrates familiarity with best practices in international studies research, and with academic standards in the field of international studies

--Work effectively in diverse and collaborative environments, including internationally and with international populations

Projects:

--The traditional DAS 525 project is a 20-30 page research paper.

Other types of projects are possible, as long as they are international, interdisciplinary, and research-based. Examples of other types of projects include:

--Digital humanities or digital archive project

--Teaching project

--Annotated anthology

--Curated historical exhibit

French literature/ film: The Myth of Margot: An Ancien Regime Stereotype

Latin American history/politics: Consequences against Community Development from Political Unrest: Evidenced by “La Guerra Sucia” in Lima, Perú

French music/ migration: Impacts on French Culture: Rai Music and Algerian Influence

Japanese music: Western Influence on Japanese Music Preferences and Japanese Identity, 1945-1978

Mentor

Many DAS 525 students work with a faculty mentor. This mentor has expertise in the subject area or methodology of the project.
