Selecting action verbs for position descriptions

The verb chosen for a duty signals the level of ownership, independence and scope involved in the work — not just what task is being done, but how much responsibility it carries. Because action verbs reflect the level of work being performed, they play an important role in determining the appropriate job classification for a position.

This list is not all-inclusive but is meant to provide guidance to managers as they create and update position descriptions, ensuring the verbs used accurately reflect the level of work being performed in the role.

Action verbs should be selected carefully to accurately reflect the nature, scope and level of work being performed. Using verbs that overstate responsibility, decision-making authority or organizational impact can unintentionally misrepresent a position and create classification inconsistencies.

While the verbs and examples in this guide are intended to support the development of position descriptions and provide a framework for distinguishing levels of work, they are only one factor considered in the classification process. Final job classification determinations are made by HR COE through a comprehensive review of the position's duties, responsibilities, scope, unit context and overall contribution to the organization.
