Course Name:  Radiation Safety Training – Sealed

Prerequisite:  None

Length of Session:  1.5 Hours

Audience:  Required for all employees who are working in areas that contain sealed radioactive material (soil moisture probes and sources completely enclosed within laboratory equipment)

Session Description:  Annual radiation safety training is required for all those working in laboratories that contain radioactive materials. This includes both those handling and not handling radioactive sources. Topics covered include radiation basics, hazards, and safety precautions as well as policies and procedures unique to the Kansas State University Radiation Safety Program. This session focuses on external hazards and is intended for those working around sealed radioactive sources (soil moisture probes and sources enclosed in laboratory equipment) as well as those working in radiation areas.

Session Objectives:  As a result of this session, participants will:

  • Identify the basic principles of radiation including types, units, and common sources in everyday life.
  • Recognize the hazards associated with radiation and be able to apply principles of ALARA to mitigate them.
  • Understand Kansas State University’s policies regarding personal dosimetry and labeling/transportation of radioactive sources.
