"Map Mondays" GIS Workshops

The Geographic Information Systems Spatial Analysis Laboratory and Institute for Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics will host a series of hands-on GIS workshops for the K-State community during the Fall 2025 semester. All workshops will take place from 9:00-11:00 am in Seaton 3014A. Participants should arrive 10 minutes early to facilitate setup.

Advance registration is required and workshops are limited to 30 participants. Desktop computers will be provided, but personal laptops may also be used. Laptops should have ArcGIS Pro 3.5 installed prior to each workshop.

This fall’s theme is skill building for beginners but will also include a kick-off session for experienced ArcMap users to begin (or master) the transition to ArcGIS Pro.

Migrating GIS Projects from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro - September 8, 2025

Skill Level: Intermediate through Advanced

Migrating to ArcGIS Pro is a smart move as Esri phases out ArcMap support by 2026. ArcGIS Pro offers a modern, user-friendly interface, enhanced performance, and better integration with 3D, real-time, and cloud-based tools like ArcGIS Online. Learn how to navigate key differences—such as project structure, symbology, and toolboxes—with hands-on support to ease the learning curve. Unlocking Spatial Insights with GIS - September 22, 2025

Skill Level: Novice

This beginner-friendly workshop introduces participants to the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for analyzing and visualizing spatial data. Through hands-on exercises and real-world examples, attendees will learn how GIS can reveal patterns, relationships, and trends that are not apparent in traditional data analysis. Key topics include map creation, spatial data layering, basic geoprocessing, and interpreting spatial outputs to inform decision-making. No prior GIS experience is required—just curiosity about answering “where” questions with data!

Sourcing, Managing and Analyzing Spatial Data - October 13, 2025

Skill Level: Beginner

This hands-on workshop guides participants through the essential skills needed to work effectively with spatial data in the ArcGIS Pro environment. Attendees will learn how to find authoritative spatial datasets, organize and manage that spatial data efficiently, and perform basic spatial analyses to extract meaningful insights. Ideal for beginners looking to strengthen their foundational GIS skills, this workshop empowers users to confidently handle the full range of GIS operations.

Web Mapping Fundamentals: From Data to Visualization - November 3, 2025

Skill Level: Beginner

This introductory workshop explores the fundamentals of web mapping using K-State's ArcGIS Online cloud-based GIS portal. Participants will learn how to create, customize, and share interactive web maps that communicate spatial information effectively to diverse audiences. The session covers key concepts such as data publishing, map styling, layer configuration, and embedding maps into websites or applications. This workshop is ideal for those new to GIS or looking to expand their skills into cloud-based mapping and visualization.
