Abdelmoneam Raef
Associate Professor
Ph.D., 2001, AGH University of Krakow
Interdisciplinary research focused on subsurface characterization using seismic, petrophysical, and machine learning techniques in reservoir characterization. Dr. Raef’s current work integrates advanced seismic interpretation, reservoir characterization, carbon sequestration studies, and data-driven geoscience applications to improve understanding of hydrocarbon reservoirs and geological storage systems. This research program includes 3D and 4D seismic analysis, rock physics, environmental and engineering geophysics, wavelet-based signal processing, and machine learning methods applied to seismic and well-log data. Recent publications contributed to reservoir modeling, lithologic characterization, carbon dioxide storage assessment, and predictive geophysical analytics, advancing both energy-resource development and sustainable subsurface management.

Dr. Abdelmoneam Raef is an applied geophysicist and academic researcher specializing in exploration seismology, seismic interpretation, reservoir characterization, and subsurface imaging. Dr. Raef earned his Ph.D. in Applied Geophysics from AGH University of Kraków, Poland. His research integrates seismic reflection data, well logs, petrophysical measurements, and geological information to improve subsurface characterization and reduce uncertainty in reservoir evaluation.
His principal research interests include three-dimensional (3D) seismic interpretation, seismic attributes, carbonate reservoir characterization, rock physics, and the application of advanced machine learning models and multi-resolution analysis to the characterization of reservoir carbonate rocks. He has investigated relationships between seismic responses, lithofacies, porosity, and reservoir properties, emphasizing the integration of geophysical observations with geological and laboratory measurements. Dr. Raef’s research on machine learning applications for lithofacies characterization and data-driven methods for seismic facies classification has integrated multiresolution and wavelet analyses for complex subsurface datasets.
As an educator, Dr. Raef contributes to geology and geophysics instruction by connecting fundamental scientific principles to practical applications in geophysical data processing, interpretation, and subsurface investigation. His teaching and research emphasize analytical problem-solving, quantitative interpretation, and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding geological systems.
Through his academic activities and research collaborations, Dr. Raef contributes to developing and applying geophysical methods for hydrocarbon exploration, reservoir evaluation, and broader subsurface investigations. His work reflects the growing integration of traditional exploration geophysics, geological interpretation, laboratory measurements, and computational techniques to address contemporary challenges in energy and geoscience research.
