Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC)

Background: The U.S. Government (USG) has established a policy with the purpose of establishing regular review of USG funded or conducted research with 15 high-consequence pathogens and toxins (listed in the accompanying information) for its potential to be dual use research of concern (DURC) in order to: (a) mitigate risks where appropriate; and (b) collect information needed to inform the development of an updated policy, as needed, for the oversight of DURC.

The fundamental aim of this oversight is to preserve the benefits of life sciences research while minimizing the risk of misuse of the knowledge, information, products, or technologies provided by such research.

Although few research activities at K-State would qualify as Dual Use Research (DUR) under the definition in the Policy, we (institution and researchers) must comply with the USG Policy for DURC where applicable.

Institutional Contact for Dual Use Research (ICDUR): The Associate VP for Research Compliance has been designated as the ICDUR. If you have questions about DUR, contact Jerry Jaax at jaax@ksu.edu, 913-307-7372; or the URCO office at comply@ksu.edu, 785-532-3224.
