Our Programs & Projects

The Center for Hazardous Substance Research (CHSR) at Kansas State University is home to the Kansas State University Technical Assistance to Brownfields (KSU TAB) Program and the Tribal Technical Assistance to Brownfields (Tribal TAB) Program. These programs, made possible by grant funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, empower communities to turn brownfield challenges into opportunities for revitalization and sustainable growth. Through engagement, education, technical expertise, and individualized support, these programs help communities identify, assess, and redevelop underutilized properties while protecting human health and the environment.

KSU TAB supports communities across the country by providing one-on-one assistance, training, and nationally accessible online tools that help users create site inventories, strengthen redevelopment planning efforts, and develop competitive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant proposals. Kansas State University is home to the National TAB Program as well as the regional programs for U.S. EPA Regions 5, 6, 7, & 8.

Tribal TAB focuses on the unique needs and priorities of Tribal Nations and tribal entities, supporting Indigenous communities in protecting and restoring culturally significant lands while advancing revitalization goals. Through collaborative, culturally informed assistance, practical tools, and access to a network of peers, mentors, and subject-matter experts, Tribal TAB helps build local capacity to address brownfields, strengthen Tribal Response Programs, enhance self-governance opportunities, and preserve environmental and cultural resources for future generations.
