Our Purpose
The Center for Hazardous Substance Research (CHSR) was established in 1989 and is part of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at Kansas State University. The purpose of the Center is to conduct research, education, and services pertaining to environmental topics, where a reputable, neutral organization is needed to develop technically sound, consensus-based solutions for diverse groups of stakeholders.

Our Center supports two large, EPA-funded programs, the Kansas State University Technical Assistance to Brownfields (KSU TAB) Program and the Tribal Technical Assistance to Brownfields (Tribal TAB) Program. We help communities overcome their challenges through collaborative technical assistance and innovative environmental, social, and economic solutions.

KSU TAB equips communities with the tools and resources needed to stimulate economic and community revitalization through engagement, education, and one-on-one assistance. We/KSU TAB also offer nationally accessible online tools to help create site inventories and develop competitive EPA grant proposals.

The Tribal Technical Assistance to Brownfields (Tribal TAB) program supports Indigenous communities in protecting and restoring sacred lands and accomplishing revitalization goals through the reuse, restoration, or redevelopment of brownfields.
