Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Kansas State Department of Chemistry REU Program in Biosecurity and Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at KSU is providing the opportunity for 10 students to perform cutting edge research for 10 weeks during the summer of 2019 (May 27th – August 2nd). This research is funded by the National Science Foundations Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (NSF-REU).
Students from all across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories [who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents] are eligible to apply. Applications are especially encouraged from students from institutions that do not have strong research programs and from colleges that traditionally have a large percentage of underrepresented minorities. Community college students are also highly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to students that are majoring in chemistry, or a related field, who have had at least one year (preferably two) of chemistry course work.
During your stay at Kansas State you will spend 10 weeks doing cutting edge research under the supervision and mentoring by one of the faculty members in the department. In addition you will learn how to use advanced chemical analysis instrumentation, how to write a short scientific paper, how to present your work at a scientific meeting, learn about the importance of ethics in science and about the nature of scientific inquiry. In addition there will be time for fun trips, bowling, ice cream and pizza parties with other students interested in science.
You can find a list of some of the potential research areas for you to work in here.
As a participating student you will be provided with a stipend of $5200 for the ten-week research experience. Your accommodations and meals are paid for by the program and travel to/from K-State for up to $750 will also be provided.
Your complete application will consist of: 1) the completed online application form, 2) your transcript, and 3) letters of recommendation from 2 individuals.
Please send your transcripts and letters of recommendation to: email@example.com
Screening of applications will begin on February 15, 2019 and will continue until the 10 spots have been filled.
Please contact Prof. Dr. Christopher T. Culbertson or Prof. Dr. Stefan H. Bossmann directly if you have any questions or need more information.
