About
The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Cereals works to increase the resiliency of cereals against environmental stressors.
Overview
The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Cereals (Cereals Lab) invests in research to identify, validate and deploy genes that improve the resiliency of wheat, sorghum, millet and rice against environmental stressors like:
- Drought
- Heat
- Salinity
- Disease
- Flooding
Our scientists use new breeding tools and methods to facilitate faster, lower-cost and more effective germplasm. By developing superior cereal varieties, we make the United States and its farmers safer, stronger, more prosperous and better prepared for the future.
Mission
The mission of the Cereals Lab is to advance the breeding of wheat, sorghum, millet and rice to increase cereal resiliency. Our researchers are discovering and deploying genetic traits that enable cereals to survive under a variety of environmental stressors. Through cutting-edge science and global collaboration, the Cereals Lab is accelerating the development of these high-performing crop varieties.
We will advance our mission through scientific inquiry, appropriate partnerships and scaling mechanisms. Research and strategic partnerships ensure a continued pipeline of improved technologies, practices and knowledge that can lead to greater profits, reduced poverty, food security and enhanced resilience for farmers.
Vision
Our vision is to develop resilient cereals, tailored to survive in specific environments. This will provide the United States with food, nutrition and economic security while generating benefits for farmers and industry.
It will strengthen international and U.S. farming systems through technological innovation, leading to more prosperous agricultural systems. Strong agricultural production helps provide more economic stability worldwide.
