Kanost Lab

Kanost Lab Overview

The Kanost group studies the biochemistry and molecular biology of insects. Our main areas of research are insect immunity, cuticle (exoskeleton) biosynthesis, and iron homeostasis. Much of our work involves studies of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, mainly because these caterpillars are larger than most insects, and this property facilitates the purification of proteins from their blood and exoskeleton. We have also used the red four beetle, fruit flies, and mosquitoes in our studies. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge about insect physiology, our research has practical implications for controlling insect-transmitted diseases, designing insect-inspired biomaterials, and supporting the health of beneficial insects.
