Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture has named its top leadership position after a native Kansan whose family roots run deep in the state’s No. 1 industry.
Growing up on a corn, wheat, soybean and Hereford cattle farm outside of Topeka, Eldon Gideon has always been deeply connected to his family’s agricultural legacy. Gideon was involved in 4-H and FFA. He continued to grow his passion for agriculture by furthering his education at K-State, graduating in 1957 with degrees in animal science and agronomy.
Gideon has contributed to the next generation of agriculturists as a producer, educator and community leader, and has been committed to youth involvement in agriculture by offering mentorship and resources.
Gideon has held leadership positions in the Kansas Livestock Association and American Hereford Association. He has also participated in various extension programs, worked with K-State faculty and was a key contributor in shaping agricultural education in Kansas to what it is today.
In 2023, Gideon gave a generous gift to K-State's College of Agriculture to empower the dean to take advantage of emerging opportunities in agriculture and to recruit outstanding faculty and students. The College of Agriculture deanship now proudly honors him through the name, Eldon Gideon Dean of the College of Agriculture.
Gideon received the Medal of Excellence in 2025, which recognizes individuals and organizations who have played a pivotal role in advancing K-State's College of Agriculture.
According to Caroline Kolins, the assistant director for agriculture and extension in the College of Agriculture, Gideon’s legacy extends beyond his own personal successes and reflects his commitment to agricultural education, supporting future generations and elevating the face of agriculture.
Kolins added that his involvement in local 4-H clubs, leadership roles in agricultural associations and service to his community has helped countless young people find their path in the industry that he holds close to his heart.
