Preparing for Your Advising Appointment
Academic advising at Kansas State University is a shared responsibility between the student and advisor. As A student, you are responsible for your success, but your advisor is here to help!
Once a semester, you’re required to meet with your academic advisor. Arriving prepared will make the most of your time together.
Run Degree Audit in DARS
Prior to your appointment, run your current degree audit in DARS. Your degree audit shows you the courses you’ve completed and those still needed for your degree path.
Work Out a Class Schedule
Refer to the graduation plan you have completed with your advisor (semester-by-semester plan of courses leading to graduation) and your DARS. You may add courses to your shopping cart to discuss with your advisor (note adding classes to your shopping cart does not reserve a seat nor enroll you in the course). This enrollment worksheet can be used to help you plan.
Check KSIS For Any Holds on Your Account
Some holds will prevent you from enrolling in classes. Make sure to address these prior to your appointment if possible.
Prepare Questions in Advance of Your Appointment
Your academic advisor is a wealth of information about university resources, opportunities, and policies. Here are some discussion ideas that your advisor can assist with or refer you to those who can!
- Goal setting
- Career planning/life after graduation
- Adding a minor/certificate/secondary major
- Getting involved on campus (career and major related, clubs and organizations, campus employment, etc.)
- Personal challenges (academic difficulties, financial, relationships, etc.)
- Study abroad and internships
- Study tips and time management
Don't forget: Your advisor is available to meet with you at other times throughout the semester, too!
