Compensation Philosophy

In alignment with our Next-Gen K-State Strategic Plan, we are committed to developing a next-generation land-grant workforce and becoming an employer of choice within Kansas and higher education. We strive to prioritize employee well-being, satisfaction, competitive rewards, recognition of excellence and opportunities for continuous improvement and growth. To achieve this, our compensation program is designed to attract, retain and promote top talent through fair, transparent and market-aligned practices.

The overarching goals of the compensation program are:

  • To attract and retain top talent at all levels of the institution
  • To support responsible and effective use of the university’s financial resources
  • To determine pay based on objective factors
  • To encourage career growth and reward performance
  • To establish compensation guidelines that promote consistency across units while allowing flexibility to reflect differences across disciplines and programs

Core Elements of K-State's Compensation Program

To deliver on our compensation philosophy and objectives, K-State uses the following integrated elements:

Decision Framework
Decisions are grounded in transparency, pay parity and market alignment, empowering leaders to make consistent, data-informed choices within established policies.
Performance Monitoring
Program effectiveness is evaluated through key metrics that assess competitiveness, internal equity, transparency and career growth opportunities.
Market Strategy and Pay Positioning
Salary ranges are based on external market data, targeting the 50th percentile for comparable roles. Individual pay is positioned within ranges based on compensable factors including qualifications, experience and sustained performance.
Total Rewards Approach
Compensation is part of a holistic total rewards program that includes base pay, special pay, benefits, professional development and wellness resources.
Administration and Governance

Human Resources, in partnership with university leadership, maintains structures and policies to ensure fairness, compliance and alignment with institutional goals.

Together, these elements support a compensation philosophy that reflects our commitment to competitive, equitable compensation that empowers our workforce and strengthens K-State’s future.
