Bringing Limited Canvas Data into Navigate
Are academic advisors guests or co-instructors in my Canvas course? No. Only limited course assignment information is visible to advisors in Navigate.
Can advisors see the syllabus, gradebook, materials, or discussion boards? No. Advisors can see course assignments, whether the student completed the assignment, and the assignment score (expressed as a percentage). Syllabi and information about the relative weight of an assignment is not visible, nor is the grading scale. Course materials and discussion boards are not visible.
Is this practice FERPA compliant? Yes. These performance data provide insight into student progress, which advisors may use to offer guidance and support. This is considered an educational need to know.
Were faculty consulted before Canvas data were added to Navigate? Several faculty members serve on committees where this plan was discussed and offered their input. We welcome faculty feedback on this initiative. Please email navigate@ksu.edu with any comments or questions. Our intention is to train advisors to use the Canvas data to drive students to connect with their faculty. We see this as an opportunity to partner with faculty in support of students.
How do I request access to Navigate? On the Navigate website there are two paths to requesting access. If one does not have permission to access student data, then a request for Navigate access can be added to the form used to request access to the Student Information System (KSIS). If one does have access to student data, then there is an online form for requesting Navigate access.
Will my aggregate course assignment data be shared with anyone? No. The unit of analysis is the individual student. By sharing assignment status, advisors can use this information to help students complete courses successfully.
Whom should I contact if I or my students have questions? Navigate related questions may be directed to navigate@ksu.edu.
