Academic coaching is designed to support students in developing the skills and strategies necessary to achieve their academic and personal goals. Academic Coaching believes that through deliberate, one-on-one meetings, all students can build the capaity to achieve academic and personal success.
Academic Coaching is a part of the Academic Achievement Center (AAC) which is the centralized learning center on the Manhattan campus. The AAC also includes Tutoring Services, Success Tools, and additional retention initiatives. Job Summary
The Graduate Assistant is responsible for delivering individualized academic coaching to many different student populations including exception admit students, scholar cohorts, students referred by campus partners, and students who drop-in. In addition to direct student support, the role contributes to the creation of tools and resources that enhance academic success initiatives and facilitates outreach efforts to promote coaching services across the university.
The position also encompasses case management responsibilities such as maintaining accurate records and efficient communication. Through a strengths-based, goal-oriented approach, this role empowers students to develop essential skills--such as time management, study strategies, and self-efficacy--while creating a welcoming environment that supports learning and personal achievement.
This is a half time (20 hours/week) GA for 9 months.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Enrollment as a current graduate student at Kansas State University.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
- Available to work 20 hours per week with some evening and weekend hours.
Renumeration and Benefits
- $13.74 per hour for up to 20 hours per week, distributed biweekly up to a total amount of $9,890.
- Eligibility for in-state tutition rates (but not a tutition waiver).

Responsibilities
- Supervision, Training and Outreach
- Supports the development of tools and resources for internal program needs and outward facing workshops/presentations to grow greater campus-wide experience with Academic Success Tools and principles of Academic Coaching.
- Outreach to required and elective student coaching participants utilizing KSU platforms (Navigate) for scheduling and communication.
- Administrative
- Maintain accurate records of student interactions utilizing KSU platforms for information sharing and reporting.
- Prepare data and report summaries related to both coaching activities and program outcomes for assessment purposes.
- Professional Development
- Attends and participates in staff meetings and departmental professional development events
- Plans and/or coordinates beneficial professional development opportunities.
- Communication
- Helps to coordinate schedules for events and meetings.
- Develop and distribute surveys to evaluate student/staff satisfaction for continued improvement.
- Communicates in a timely fashion to e-mails and other correspondence.
- Coaching
- Provide academic coaching to the university’s undergraduate and graduate student populations. Specific student populations include students conditionally admitted, scholar student cohorts, and specific cohorts of students in partnership with colleges, programs, and other campus partners, and more. Academic Coaches utilize an individual, goal based coaching practice where students self-identify areas of academic need to focus on during one-on-one meetings. Individuals in this role draw from the program’s Academic Success Tools and employ the use of powerful questions to build a student’s capacity to meet learning challenges as related to core areas of learning and personal success (time management, study skills, test-taking, communication, self-efficacy).
- Creates a safe and welcoming space for program participants who come from a range of cohorts including undergraduate students who are required to participate in Academic Coaching to students who elect to utilize coaching voluntarily as a resources to support them as they navigate learning challenges.
- Develops a rapport and positive asset-based relationship with students and are adept at assessing student strengths/need.
- Takes on a collaborative approach to student support and facilitate referrals to other on/off campus resources as needed.
