Ira "Swede" Schindler

I am part of a long legacy of Wildcats. As a storyteller I am always proud to tell of our Kansas State lineage. Our grandfather Ira "Swede" Schindler played on one of the earliest football teams — a great emphasis on the leather helmet and lack of pads. Both he and my grandmother graduated when it was still an agricultural college.

My father hitchhiked from his hometown to Manhattan to attend, highlighting education over poverty and the dangers of hitchhiking. He graduated with both bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture and worked with the Kansas State Extension Service until he retired. My mother graduated with both a B.A. and an M.A., modeling the importance of education.

To my parents, Manhattan was home; the campus, our playground; Wildcats, our team; McCain, our culture; All Faiths Chapel for marriage; and the Bill Snyder Family Stadium to be remembered.
