Collegian Media Group wins 31 statewide awards

Submitted by Ira David Levy

Members of the Collegian Media Group celebrate winning 31 awards at the Kansas Collegiate Media Spring Conference in Wichita, April 21-22. CMG employs more than 100 students who work on three multimedia student publications including the Royal Purple yearbook, Manhappenin' magazine and Collegian print and digital newspaper.

Students who publish The Collegian newspaper, Royal Purple yearbook and Manhappenin' magazine won 31 awards in 19 categories at this year's Kansas Collegiate Media conference, April 21-22. This includes the Collegian Media Group's advertising and marketing team.

Meredith McCalmon, The Collegian newspaper's news desk editor, won second place for Journalist of the Year.

"Meredith pushes herself and her team to report as thoroughly as possible," said David Levy, Collegian Media Group's director. "I'm very proud of her tenacity and talent."

Maddy Daniels, Manhappenin' magazine writer, won first place for Profile Feature Story; and Kaitlynn Faber, The Collegian's arts and culture editor, won first place and an honorable mention for Feature Writing.

In the category of Yearbook and Magazine Page Spread, Joscelyne Espinoza won first place.

"I'm always impressed at the long hours our students choose to put into our publications," said Mahappenin' and Royal Purple yearbook adviser Hallie Everett. "Yes, they get the experience, and they get to put their accomplishments on their resumes, but to them it's all about serving the K-State community. That's their primary goal, and I'm proud."

Maggie James, Collegian Media Groups' advertising and marketing creative team member, won first place for Best Advertising Design.

"Maggie has been a tremendous contributor to CMG," said Daren Lee Lewis, Collegian Media Groups assistant director. "We will sorely miss her talents when she graduates this year. Everyone in our advertising department works hard to make each of our publications possible. Their efforts continue to set a high standard of excellence."

The Collegian won second place in both the All-Kansas competition for Best Newspaper, which includes print and online.

Levy said, "Our students major in so many academic disciplines. Those who don't major in journalism know the value of the transferable skills that the Collegian Media Group offers. They're willing to do the hard work that human resource recruiters crave when looking for their next intern or new-hire out of college. All students are invited to join CMG and begin building their portfolios and career paths."
