Nicole Kucherov, a promising doctoral student from the Kansas State University entomology department, has been selected as a Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, or FFAR, Fellow for its 2023-2026 cohort.

The three-year fellowship aims to bridge the gap between academia and the agricultural industry by facilitating professional development and fostering collaborations between researchers and industry professionals. Her research focuses on the spatial distribution of insect pests and beneficial insects. Through this experience, she will hone greater interpersonal skills so that her research and results are that much more relevant to farmers and useful to sustainable agriculture.

Kucherov found the opportunity through her major advisor, entomology assistant professor Tania Kim, who recommended she connect with K-Stater and current fellow, Addison Carroll, to learn more. Inspired and motivated after talking to Carroll, Kucherov applied for the prestigious fellowship. Kucherov sought to further her expertise in a program that would provide invaluable connections and knowledge-sharing opportunities with industry experts.

The fellowship focuses on equipping participants with the necessary skills and experiences to make their research more relevant and impactful for farmers and sustainable agriculture. The program offers a comprehensive range of activities, including five in-person meetings, monthly virtual sessions, mentorship opportunities, and the development and execution of annual professional development plans.

"I am looking forward to the relationships that I will gain from this experience, with my peers across the country as well as with industry professionals," Kucherov said. "It is primarily about professional development, including mentorship from people in industry as a supplement to all of the work that we do in academia."

The fellowship program encompasses various enriching experiences, including site visits with industry scientists and commodity leaders in North Carolina this year, a trip to the prestigious World Food Prize in 2024, and a visit to Washington, D.C., in 2025 to meet with policymakers and explore career opportunities in the public sector.
