Computing and information sciences department to host lecture on Eclipse and Java Development Tools

Submitted by Susan Cregg

Patrice Chalin, associate professor of computing and information sciences, will present an introduction to Eclipse and Java Development Tools from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday in 126 Nichols Hall.

Eclipse is a very popular Integrated Development Environment that offers a rich environment in which professional software developers can do most tasks related to software development including, of course, editing and compiling code, but also: accessing source code repositories, creating documentation, and tracking software bugs (tickets). Eclipse has a rich set of features that helps make developers more productive including as-you-type checking of source code, name completion, quick fixes, code templates, refactoring, support for unit testing, a sophisticated debugger and much more! This talk starts with a basic introduction to the general capabilities of Eclipse. We then illustrate advanced features using the Java Development Tooling Eclipse is actually a plug-in based tooling platform with a very small core. All Eclipse features are provided by plug-ins (even the Java Development Tool is a plug-in). Tying in to a previous How-To talk on web design we will briefly mention the powerful Web-Tools Platform. Finally we note that this Eclipse/Java Development Tool introduction will be very useful for the next How-To talk on Android app and game development.
