Entomologist publishes article on host-plant resistance in the 2012 Annual Review of Entomology

Submitted by David Margolies

C. Michael Smith, professor of entomology, and Stephen Clement, retired USDA-ARS scientist, published "Molecular bases of plant resistance to arthropods" in the 2012 Annual Review of Entomology.

Arthropod-resistant crops provide significant ecological and economic benefits to global agriculture. Plant and arthropod genomics provide many opportunities to more efficiently develop arthropod-resistant plants, but integration of resistant cultivars into integrated pest management programs will succeed only through interdisciplinary collaboration. This article reviews what is known about genetic bases of host-plant resistance to insects, and describes systems in which this knowledge has been successfully incorporated into integrated pest management programs. The full Review in Advance article can be found here.
