The sound of rock music: Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata comes to McCain Feb. 10

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

Prepare to rock out to "The Sound of Music." Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata will turn this iconic American musical on its head in the group's upcoming debut in Kansas State University's McCain Performance Series.

Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata, or BRO, will perform its show "The Hills Are Alive" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in McCain Auditorium. A Brooklyn, N.Y., rock band, the group released its album in 2011 and is led by Grammy-nominated East Village Opera Company mastermind Peter Kiesewalter.

"This band is made up of some of the best musicians in New York and features alumni from Steely Dan; Blood, Sweat and Tears; and Matchbox 20," said Todd Holmberg, director of McCain Auditorium. "Their artistry will only be surpassed by their creativity when they perform the songs we all know and love in wonderfully imaginative ways."

The group's performance features a genre-bending adaptation of the songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music." With unprecedented artistic license granted by the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization, the performance includes Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata's version of 14 songs that blend rock, jazz, hip-hop, rhythm and blues, and country into a musical mash-up.

"The band's rendition of 'The Sound of Music's' 'Do Re Mi' mashed up with Jackson Five's 'ABC' is both inventive and fun to listen to," Holmberg said. "Plus, each song is more clever than the first. The band is very adept at stretching creatively as well as providing an entertaining show."
