Save the date: K-State/National Academic Advising Association Summer Advising Institute May 20-21

Submitted by Steven Dandaneau

Dear faculty and full-time advisers,

Please save the dates of May 20-21 for the second Kansas State University/National Academic Advising Association, or NACADA, Summer Undergraduate Academic Advising Institute.

All interested faculty and full-time academic and student life advisers — anyone interested in advising — are welcome to attend. Detailed program information, including institute registration procedures, is forthcoming.

This year's summer institute will offer a concentrated look at the challenges and opportunities associated with advising first-generation students — those students whose parents or guardians have not themselves earned four-year college degrees. About 40 percent of K-State undergraduates are first-generation students. It is likely that this sizable cohort intersects with every significant undergraduate student subgroup.

Supporting our first-gen focus, we are pleased to announce two keynote speakers: Susan Campbell, chief student affairs officer at Southern Maine University and past president of the national advising association; and Diane Schorr, executive director of First Scholars, a program of the Suder Foundation.

The institute also will feature K-State faculty, staff and students, and will address numerous issues not directly related to advising first-gen students.

The second Kansas State University/National Academic Advising Association Summer Undergraduate Academic Advising Institute is a professional development opportunity planned for and funded by the University Advising Committee. For additional information or with questions, please contact committee co-chairs, Steve Dandaneau, at 785-532-1097 or Carla Jones, 785-532-7305.
