Shared Flux Reciprocal Electric Actuator: Patent # 4,486,728 with 19 claims, issued 12/04/1984. An electromagnetic actuator is provided by an armature plunger which reciprocally shuttles between magnetic paths having common overlapping portions through the plunger. A magnetically permeable yoke directs the flux paths of a pair of coaxial coils. When either coil is energized, a first flux path is created around that coil through the plunger and a second flux path is created around both coils through the plunger. The first path pulls the plunger to close an axial magnetic air gap. The second path holds the plunger in place. The ratio of the permeances of the two paths is controlled such that one path always overpowers the other, to insure plunger movement in either direction.

Torsion damping mechanism with a viscous coupling: Patent # 4,557,357 with 10 claims, issued 12/10/1985. A mechanism disposed in a torque converter housing for damping torsionals in a vehicle drive line. The mechanism comprises a viscous coupling including a housing having two sidewalls defining a chamber containing a viscous liquid, and a clutch member disposed in the chamber for viscous clutching coaction with the housing. One of the sidewalls is defined by an end wall of the torque converter housing. The housing and clutch member are interconnected by a spring assembly including flat torsion springs which transmit steady-state drive line torque and isolate drive line torsionals. The inner surfaces of housing each include two circumferentially spaced clutching surfaces separated by the clutch member. The clutch member has oppositely facing surfaces each which include two flat circumferentially spaced clutching surfaces. When the clutching surfaces of the housing are disposed opposite the clutching surfaces of the clutch member, the clutching coaction there between is a maximum. When the clutching surfaces of the housing are disposed opposite the spaces between the clutching surfaces of the clutch member, the clutching coaction is a minimum. Mechanism differs from mechanism mainly with respect to the clutching surfaces and the position of the spring assemblies. Mechanism has flat clutching surfaces, and the spring assembly is external of the viscous coupling, whereas mechanism has annular rings defining the clutching surfaces, and the spring assembly is internal of the viscous coupling.

Check valve: Patent # 4,751,940 with 7 claims, issued 06/21/1988. A check valve using a porous membrane to discriminate between gases and liquids. An elastomeric porous membrane disposed in the valve body at right angles to flow bears directly against a non-porous closure plate which is held off of a valve seat by a spring whose force acts opposite to the direction of fluid flow. The valve, therefore, is normally open. Air flows through the membrane with relatively little resistance and therefore passes through the valve unimpeded. Liquid, on the other hand, meets substantially high resistance to flow and creates a force on the membrane opposing the bias force exerted by the spring. Liquid, therefore, tends to displace the membrane and the closure member against the valve seat to close the valve. The device is advantageously applied to fuel management systems.

Proximity Detector Employing Magneto Resistive Sensor in the Central Magnetic Field Null of a Torodial Magnet:
Patent # 4,857,841 with 14 claims, 08/15/1989. The present invention is a proximity sensor employing a magneto resistive structure. This proximity sensor includes a toroidal magnet having a central aperture, an inner circumference and an outer circumference. This toroidal magnet has a first magnetic pole at the inner circumference and a second magnetic pole at the outer circumference thereby creating a magnetic field null at a center portion of the central aperture. A magneto resistive structure is disposed at the magnetic field null in the central aperture of the toroidal magnetic. This magneto resistive structure has a resistance dependent upon magnetic flux. The proximity of a magnetically permeable target to the toroidal magnet shifts the position of the magnetic null, thereby causing a large change in the magnetic flux through the magneto resistive structure. An electrical detection circuit detects changes in this resistance for indication of the proximity of the magnetically permeable target.

Multiturn shaft position sensor with backlash compensation: Patent # 4,914,389 with 11 claims, issued 04/03/1990. The present invention is a shaft position sensor for detection of the position of a multiturn shaft. The rotation of the multiturn shaft is converted into a linear motion via a multiturn screw and two axially spaced non-rotating nuts which are oppositely continuously axially biased by intermediate compressed springs. A magnet is mounted on one of the nonrotating nuts. The linear movement of the magnet is converted into an electrical signal using a magneto resistive structure. A pair of flux plates is disposed on either side of the linear path of the magnet with a narrow gap opposite one end of the linear path of the magnet. The magneto resistive structure is disposed in the narrow gap. An electrical circuit measures the resistance of the magneto resistive structure, this resistance varying with magnetic flux, and generates an electrical position signal which indicates the rotary position of the multiturn shaft. Linearity in response can be provided by a flux shunt which blocks magnetic flux directly from the magnet, control of the distance of the flux plates from the linear path of the magnet.

Hydrocarbon fractionation by adsorbent membranes: Patent # 5,332,424 containing 17 claims, issued 07/26/1994. A method is disclosed for separating a multicomponent gas mixture comprising at least three components into three product streams by use of adsorbent membrane zones operating in series. Each product is enriched in a different component based upon the relative strength of adsorption of each component on the adsorbent material. A non-permeate primary component product is obtained by the selective adsorption and permeation through the adsorbent membranes of secondary components which are more strongly adsorbed than the primary components in the gas mixture. Two or more permeate streams enriched in the more strongly adsorbed components are withdrawn from the membrane zones as individual secondary products, each of which contains a different component distribution determined by the relative strength of adsorption of the secondary components on the adsorbent material. Increased recovery and product purity are realized by the integration of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and cryogenic separation systems with the adsorbent membrane zones. PSA reject gas is used as a membrane sweep gas to increase the permeation rates of secondary components.

Electromagnetic wave, reflective type, low cost, active proximity sensor for harsh environments: Patent # 5,905,380 containing 8 claims, issued 05/18/1999. An electromagnetic, reflective type, active proximity sensor includes a transmitter, the transmitter including a voltage controlled oscillator circuit, a transmitter circular waveguide and a transmitter polarization circuit. The voltage controlled oscillator circuit generates an output signal which is modulated such that the frequency of the output signal varies over time between a range of frequencies. The frequency varying, output signal is provided to the transmitter circular waveguide and propagated to the transmitter polarization circuit where it is circularly polarized in a first circular direction. The circularly polarized, frequency varying, output signal is radiated by the transmitter to the target, where it strikes the target and reflects back toward the sensor to form return signals. The return signals, upon being reflected, rotate in a second circular direction opposite to the first circular direction. The return signals also respectively exhibit one of the frequencies corresponding to the range of frequencies associated with the circularly polarized, frequency varying, output signal. The active proximity sensor also includes a receiver, the receiver including a receiver circular waveguide, a receiver polarization circuit and a detector. The receiver circular waveguide receives the return signals reflected from the target and the receiver polarization circuit circularly de-polarizes the return signals. Next, the detector receives and averages the return signals and generates an output signal which corresponds to the return signals. The active proximity sensor also includes an analog processor/driver circuit for processing the output signal provided by the detector.
