Heather Reed
Heather M. Reed is the Assistant Dean and Director of Student Life. Her career has focused on teaching and counseling with an emphasis on managing student crises and problems.
Heather is a native Kansan from a family of K-Staters, who spent many years teaching in western Kansas. She completed her Masters in Counseling and went on to serve as Department Head of the Counseling Department at Garden City High School and to participate on the USD 457 Crisis Response Team. These experiences have provided a foundation that has enhanced her work in student life.
At K-State she serves as the chair of the Crisis Management Team, the Critical Incident Response Team and assists with parent, student and faculty orientations. Heather is an adjunct instructor for the School of Leadership Studies and enjoys interacting with students in and out of the classroom.
Her professional interests include crisis management, campus safety and the coordination of campus support services.
Karen Low
Karen R. Low is the Assistant Director of Student Life.
Before accepting the Student Life position, Low was Assistant Director of Adult
Student Services at K-State.
She helped nontraditional students and their families
navigate the transition to university by utilizing both their personal resources and
those available to them at the university.
Low moved to Kansas from Montana, where she was assistant professor and
director of the Master of Science in Counseling program at the University of
Great Falls. In addition to program administration and teaching at the
undergraduate and graduate levels, student advising and mentoring have been
central to her mission of helping students succeed.
A nontraditional, first-generation
college student herself, Low earned her
Bachelors in Human Services, and Masters in Professional Counseling while her
children were also in school. Her wide variety of experiences in and out of higher
education lend a unique perspective to her student affairs work.
Her professional interests include student judicial affairs, nontraditional and multicultural student services, and program assessment.
Lindsey Swoyer
Lindsey Swoyer is the graduate research assistant in the Office of Student Life. She is working on her masters in College Student Development to be completed in May 2010. She received her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from K-State in December 2008. Swoyer is from Shawnee, KS and is a third generation K-Stater. She is very involved in campus life, and is a graduate student senator for Student Governing Association, Rec Expansion Committee member, co-chair of the Student Affairs Graduate Association, and an active volunteer advisor for her sorority.
