The provost and senior vice president is Kansas State University's Chief Academic Officer, whose most important duty is oversight of the academic dimensions of the university and to ensure the university's academic standards. In cooperation with the president and the Deans Council, the provost provides leadership in the development, review, and operationalization of policies and goals regarding instruction, research and extension programs.

The provost works closely with the president to develop university priorities and administer program budget and faculty personnel policies. The provost serves as a representative of the president and in place of the president during his absence.

The deans of the nine academic colleges, the libraries, Graduate School, and the Division of Continuing Education report to the provost. University offices also associated with the Office of the Provost include: the Vice Provost for Research, the Vice Provost for Information Technology Services, Planning and Analysis, Assessment, Diversity and Dual Career Development, International Programs, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, the Center for Engagement and Community Development, Academic Personnel, University Honors Program, and the Honor and Integrity System.
