Sustainability Ambassadors Needed
From Garbage to Gourmet is an EPA funded pilot study on campus with the objective to transition the Kansas State University campus to a closed loop waste management system where materials will be used to their fullest before they are properly disposed. The project focuses on the reduction of waste to landfills by introducing a composting pilot study that is being conducted at Radina's Coffeehouse and Roastery in the Leadership Studies Building on campus. Instead of the organic waste produced at Radina's being directed to landfills, both pre-consumer and post-consumer compost is collected from the coffeehouse. A novel aspect of this pilot study includes cutting-edge research on different mushroom species that can be cultivated from the spent coffee grounds.
This pilot study is just phase one, but in order to be eligible for phase two and the potential $100,000 grant to implement composting campus wide, the pilot study needs to be successful. Currently there is often contamination of other items in the compost receptacle which is not compostable. This requires the workers of Radina's to have to sort through the compost to remove these items, but ultimately this means that the pilot study is not succeeding. When Harvard University introduced composting to it's students, it had composting ambassadors at the waste sorting receptacles to engage with each customer or student on how to properly sort their waste items. In order to make this pilot study a success and be eligible for the $100,000 for phase two, I propose that we have composting ambassadors during peak hours at Radina's for the first four weeks at Radina's Coffeehouse and Roastery in the Leadership Studies Building. Radina's peak hours are 9:30 am to 2:30 pm Monday through Friday. Those interested in helping transition Kansas State University to achieve a major sustainability goal by donating just one or more hours of their time during the first four weeks of the spring semester, please contact email@example.com. Let us embrace the Kansas State University motto "Rule by Obeying Nature's Laws" by increasing awareness of the benefits of composting at Radina's and eventually making this option availabile campus wide.

OSAS is looking to find student organizations on twitter to help spread the word on events your organization is hosting. If your organization has a twitter account follow KSU_OSAS to find out about the latest student organization events happening on campus & share your own with us!
Also, share the news with all of your members to keep them up to date on events around campus.
Upcoming Student Organization Events
The Office of Student Activities and Services has created a new calendar for student organizations to promote their events to the K-State campus. If you are interested in promoting your events on the calendar, please submit them to our office by email or by visiting the web form. All on-campus events funded by Student Governing Association will automatically be listed.
To view the new calendar you can visit the OSAS website. The events will also be listed on the digital signs in front of the OSAS office, and eventually integrated into the campus wide calendar. If you have any questions, or are interested in creating your own calendar within the K-State system, contact the office.
