Bryant Lecture features architect Perry Kulper from the University of Michigan

Friday, Sept. 6, 2013

MANHATTAN -- The College of Architecture, Planning and Design at Kansas State University will present Perry Kulper as the speaker for its Bryant Lecture Series at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the K-State Student Union Little Theater. The event is free and the public is invited.

Kulper wants the audience to leave his lecture with a broader sense of the relationship between the language of architecture and the language of representation.

"I have a natural curiosity toward the roles of representation and methodologies in the production of architecture, and in the broadening of conceptual ranges by which architecture contributes to cultural imagination," Kulper said. “When I'm done speaking, I hope to have instilled that same curiosity."

His lecture, "Behind the Scenes," considers relations that occupy a space between the language of representation and the language of design. He will use student work, his work and four core areas to build a contextualization by locating the roles played by a range of variables in architectural education -- roles and potential of architectural drawing, varied design methods toward increased design dexterity, and conceptual broadening for what's possible architecturally.

Kulper, a member of the American Institute of Architecture, is an associate professor of architecture at the University of Michigan. He also has been a member of the faculty at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, or SCI-Arc, for 17 years and served in visiting positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Arizona State University.

Subsequent to his studies at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and Columbia University, Kulper worked in the offices of Eisenman/Robertson, Robert A.M. Stern, and Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown before moving to Los Angeles.
