Culinary workshop to bring taste of Ireland to Kansas State University

Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015

MANHATTAN — Chef Paula McIntyre will import a bit of Ireland to the annual Culinary Enhancement Workshops at Kansas State University in February.

McIntyre will discuss authentic ingredients and trending foods in Ireland, and will demonstrate several traditional Irish dishes on Thursday, Feb. 26, and Friday, Feb. 27, in the Gold Room at Derby Dining Center. The annual event is sponsored by the hospitality management and dietetics department in the College of Human Ecology.

Each daylong workshop costs $115 for professionals and alumni and $5 for students. Registration deadline is Feb. 6 and can be done online at http://bit.ly/1z2JxMP.

McIntyre, one of Northern Ireland's most popular broadcasters with her own television and radio series, is the author of "A Kitchen Year" and writes regularly for newspapers and magazines.

"There's been a food revolution here over the past five or six years, with farmers diversifying all the time. Our meat, our breads, our ciders and our butter are all award winners and are in demand from the top restaurants and supermarkets in England," she told a reporter at the Belfast Telegraph.

McIntyre studied business in Belfast then took a degree in culinary arts from Johnson and Wales University, Rhode Island. After running her own restaurant in Manchester, England, and working in restaurants in London, she headed back to Northern Ireland.

McIntyre is a frequent guest chef at events in Northern Ireland and works as chef demonstrator and live cookery theater host with area festival and food shows. She has also worked as a recipe developer, food stylist, food event judge and college lecturer.

The workshops are from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day. They will be followed by an optional Breads of Northern Ireland hands-on workshop from 3 to 4 p.m. The workshop is limited to 20 participants at an additional cost of $10 for professionals, free for K-State students.
