Record number of scholarships awarded to distance education students

Friday, Sept. 29, 2017

MANHATTAN — Scholarships continue to grow for distance education students at Kansas State University Global Campus.

For the fall 2017 semester, 50 students across the U.S. and in Canada have been awarded scholarships. The total awarded for one semester, $53,600, is more than double what was once awarded to distance students for an entire school year.

The variety of scholarships available also is growing. This year, Global Campus added three new scholarships: K-State Global Campus New Student Scholarship for Distance Education Students, K-State Global Campus Dean's Merit Scholarship for Distance Education Students and K-State Global Campus Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship for Distance Education Students. Each of the new scholarships provides $1,200 per semester to undergraduate awardees and $1,500 per semester to graduate awardees.

The need for additional funding remains for distance students, especially those who take classes part time as they juggle work and family responsibilities. Also, not as many scholarships for part-time students are available, according to Sue Maes, dean of Global Campus.

"K-State Global Campus is home to many bright, talented and driven individuals who often must stop for a semester because of a lack of financial resources," Maes said. "This lost time is detrimental, causing students to put off their graduation date or even drop out altogether as they lose their momentum. Growing scholarship funding remains a high priority for Global Campus."
