Architecture, Planning and Design

Four programs offered by the College of Architecture, Planning
and Design are ranked in the top 10 in the nation, according to
a nationwide survey of professional firms in the United States.
The 2005 survey, conducted by DesignIntelligence and the Design
Futures Council, ranks K-State's bachelor of interior architecture/design
program and the bachelor of landscape architecture program as
No. 3 in the nation in their respective categories. The bachelor
of architecture program ranks sixth in the survey, and the master
of landscape architecture program ranks eighth. December 2004
Greenway's
Almanac of Architecture and Design: 2005/6th edition ranked four
of K-State's architectural programs in the top 10 for the United
States of America. The department of architecture was ranked as
the sixth best undergraduate program in the nation, ranked above
all ofthe other universities in the Big 12. The department of
interior architecture and product design is ranked No. 3 in the
country and is ahead of all other Big 12 universities. The department
of landscape architecture/regional and community planning has
one of the three best undergraduate programs and it one of the
eight best graduate programs in landscape architecture. November

Katie Eatinger Paquette, a May 2004 bachelor's graduate of K-State's
landscape architecture program, received first place in the undergraduate
individual design category of the annual American Society of Landscape
Architects National Student Design Competition. It is the 48th
award won by a K-State student in the competition, which is twice
as many awards as any other school. August 2004

Tamara Felts, a fifth-year senior in architectural engineering
at K-State, was selected by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating
and Air Conditioning Engineers, also known as ASHRAE, as the recipient
of a $3,000 general scholarship. Only two students in the nation
were chosen for the scholarship. Felts, Shawano, Wis., was presented
the scholarship at the society's winter meeting in Anaheim, Calif.,
at the end of January. Fourteen other members of the K-State chapter

Derek Trumpp, a third-year student in interior architecture and
product design at K-State, received the top honor in the Exhibit
Designers and Producers Association International Student Design
Competition. Judging took place in Atlanta, Ga., in February.
As the first-place winner, Trumpp, Palco, received a $4,000 scholarship
and a complete design software package from Autodesk. He also
has been offered a summer internship at Freeman Exhibits in Dallas.
Trumpp's project was one of several K-State entries from an assignment
in the Product Design class taught by Allan Hastings, professor
of interior architecture and product design. For the class and
the competition, students were asked to bid and/or collaborate
on an interactive exhibit environment, 50 feet by 50 feet, for
Acoustic Alchemy, an international instrument manufacturer. March

Students in Professor Don Watts' Architectural Design Studio 4
are spending part of the spring semester working for an actual
client: the steering committee for the Lumberyard Arts Center
in Baldwin City. The committee is overseeing efforts to turn a
local landmark, a former lumberyard building, into a community
center for the visual, performing, literary and heritage arts.
The K-State students will be contributing design ideas for the
center. February 2004

K-State's interior architecture/interior design and architecture
programs rank third and eighth, respectively, according to a 2004
nationwide survey of leading firms across the United States. The
annual survey, by Design Intelligence and the Design Futures Council
in conjunction with the Almanac of Architecture and Design, asks
firms to indicate which accredited programs in interior architecture/interior
design and in architecture have produced, in the last five years,
graduates most prepared for practice. It's the fourth consecutive
year K-State ranks as having one of the top three interior architecture/interior
design programs in the nation. It's also the third time in survey
history that K-State's architecture program has been ranked among
the top 10. February 2004

Jill Enz, a graduate student in landscape architecture, is the
2004 recipient of the Hideo Sasaki Foundation Scholarship. Enz
is only the second recipient of the $7,500 scholarship. According
to the Hideo Sasaki Foundation, the scholarship was created in
2003 to recognize annually "the outstanding planning and
design student pursuing the integration of the professional design
disciplines." January 2004
