Kansas State University achievements

2002 Human ecology

* Deborah Canter, professor of hotel, restaurant, institution management and dietetics and a registered dietitian, is the 2002 recipient of the American Dietetic Association's Medallion Award. The medallion, awarded to only eight of the association's 70,000 members each year, recognizes members who have contributed to the dietetics profession through exceptional service, outstanding leadership, serving as an outstanding role model, setting high standards for the profession and moving the profession forward. Canter was recognized for her leadership in dietetics education and her mentoring of hundreds of students across the United States and New Zealand through her classes, invited presentations, conference keynote speeches and through K-State's distance education program in dietetics. October 2002

* In August 2002 the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education awarded continued accreditation to K-State's marriage and family therapy programs. K-State remains competitive as one of two accredited marriage and family therapy programs in Kansas and one of nine nationwide offering both a master's and doctoral program. The program was first accredited in 1982 and has maintained accreditation continuously since then. Every six years, the programs are inspected to meet more than 100 compliance standards. October 2002

* The Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association awarded continued accreditation to the communication sciences and disorders master's program at K-State. The master's program began in the mid-1960s at K-State and has maintained accreditation continuously since then. Every eight years, site visitors inspect the program and the Speech and Hearing Center for accreditation. They also meet with students and clients to receive feedback about the program. The program is carefully reviewed to see if it is up to all required standards. May 2002

* For the third year in a row, a team of K-State students was invited to compete in the national collegiate financial planning championship in Minneapolis, Minn., April 11-14. K-State finished third nationally, taking home $1,000 in scholarship money. Fort Hays State University won the invitational, followed by Western Carolina University. The students were judged on their presentation of a financial plan they created for a fictitious family and their performance in the "How Do You Know?" challenge, a game-show style competition designed to test students' financial planning knowledge. April 2002

* A team of K-State students in interior design and architecture placed second overall at the eighth annual Interior Design Educators Council student design competition in Sante Fe, N.M., March 19-24. The regional competition chose two entries, both from K-State, to represent the Midwest region March 7. The two teams then competed at the international competition with other regional winners. The competition requires teams of no more than five students, with the majority of team members from interior design and one of the team members from a different discipline. The teams were given seven calendar days to design an adaptable and inspiring space based on several choices in design themes. K-State teams submitted their designs on compact disc in a digital slide show format. Ryadi Adityavarman, assistant professor of interior design, was faculty sponsor for both design teams. March 2002

* K-State's interior design program has been ranked No. 2 nationally by the Almanac of Architecture and Design and Design Intelligence. This is their third annual ranking of interior design schools. K-State was second only to the University of Cincinnati. The K-State program moved up from third place last year to second. The Design Intelligence survey combined K-State's interior architecture and interior design programs. January 2002
