McCain Auditorium hosts about 20 musical and artistic performances each year, produced by K-State groups or by visiting entertainers. The auditorium's structural and acoustic setup can adapt to audience sizes from 900 up to 1,800, with a ceiling that can be lowered to close off the balcony for smaller gatherings. A three-story addition contains radio and television facilities, as well as offices, classrooms, rehearsal rooms and storage for the Department of Music.

History
The current auditorium dates from 1970, five years after a fire destroyed the first structure. That original auditorium was built in 1904 to seat about 2,000 people, but fire ravaged the building in 1965. The auditorium's name honors Dr. James A. McCain, who retired in 1975 after 25 years as university president.
