IT newsletter archives

A wealth of computer history is in K-State's computing newsletter, which was started in 1972 by M. Jane Brown (in the Computer Center) as a paper publication for the K-State community.

It was published 10 times a year for the next 23 years (until fall 1995) and had an average audience of 1,500 subscribers (~950 K-Staters, 250 higher education institutions, 300 miscellany handouts).

  • August 1991
An email version began being sent to campus administrators and stored online. Editor: Jane Brown
  • February 1986 - May 1994
These newsletter issues, which had been created using the SCRIPT word-processing program on the IBM mainframe, were converted into digital format and put on K-State's website, originally at www.ksu.edu/cns/news/nl. Editor: Jane Brown; assistant editor: Betsy Edwards.
(NOTE: These issues were stored on the website of Computing and Network Services, and were archived to DVD in spring 2014 by K-State central web staff. They may be available online at a later date.)
  • Fall 1994 - July 1995
(NOTE: These issues were stored on the website of Computing and Network Services, and were archived to DVD in spring 2014 by K-State central web staff. They may be available online at a later date.) Editor: Betsy Edwards
  • Fall 1995 - Fall 1998
Both the paper and email versions fell by the wayside due to other IT communications priorities, including the World Wide Web and LISTSERV mailing lists.
  • September 1998 - June 2000
The newsletter was resurrected as a Web publication at ksu.edu/cns/newsletter every other month, and efforts made to move toward monthly publication again. Editor: Betsy Edwards
  • Dec. 4, 2001 - Aug. 19, 2008
InfoTech Tuesday was created at /infotech/news/tuesday as a weekly online publication, a joint effort by Computing and Network Services (CNS) and the Information Technology Assistance Center (iTAC). Editor: Betsy Edwards
  • August 2008 - July 2011
The IT newsletter became a news blog at blogs.k-state.edu/itnews and was published every Tuesday on 50 weeks of the year. A short email with the headlines (and links) was sent via the INFOTECHTUESDAY mailing list to ~5,500 K-State subscribers (mostly faculty/staff, some students, and ~200 off-campus subscribers from other higher-education institutions and the Manhattan area). Editor: Betsy Edwards
  • May 2011
IT News emails were terminated and IT news was required to be sent through K-State Today (k-state.edu/today) along with many other campus news, events, kudos, and announcements. This was due to a K-State mandate to consolidate campus news channels and reduce the number of LISTSERV mailing lists, even though IT News had 5,500+ subscribers.
  • December 2011-present: The current IT News blog was revived at blogs.k-state.edu/it-news due to ongoing demand from K-State faculty/staff. (See IT News blog starts up Dec. 12 due to popular demand.)
