Scholars and Interns

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) assists departments in bringing visiting international scholars and researchers to K-State. The following information explains the different categories in which scholars and researchers can be brought to the university. The links will take you to pages that provide information on the processes involved and the documentation needed.

In brief, the most common categories that may be used by foreign nationals at K-State are the following:

J-1 Scholar/Professor/
Short Term Scholar

  • Appropriate for temporary employment (up to 5 years, depending on J category)
  • Cannot be for a tenure-track position
  • Nonimmigrant status

J-1 Student Intern

  • For undergraduates seeking to complete an internship at K-State
  • Cannot exceed 12 months
  • Nonimmigrant status

E-3

  • For nationals of Australia only
  • Appropriate for temporary employment. It cannot be used for a tenure-track position
  • Nonimmigrant status

TN

  • For Canadian and Mexican nationals only
  • Appropriate only for temporary employment. It cannot be used for a tenure-track position
  • Nonimmigrant status

H-1B Scholar

  • Appropriate for specialty occupations such as: tenure-track faculty, permanent research positions, permanent lecturers, and other specialized occupations
  • Nonimmigrant status

Green Card
(Permanent Residency)

  • Immigrant status
  • For permanent employment
