About the CatPack

The CatPack DVD is a free, personalized software collection for K-Staters. Because some software is restricted due to licensing agreements, the CatPack is for K-State faculty, staff, students, and university departments only. A new DVD is released on the third Wednesday of each month. It is available at these locations:

• IT Help Desk, 214 Hale Library
• Computing and Telecommunications Services, 109 East Stadium
• Union Computer Store, 115 K-State Student Union

The Windows/Macintosh CatPack DVD is only for computers running these operating systems:

• Windows 2000, XP, or Vista
• Macintosh 10.4 or 10.5

Windows CatPack software

Antivirus

• Trend Micro AutoScan (v 8.0) — Antivirus software for use on campus and home computers, plus the most current virus definitions. Restricted to use by K-State students, employees, and departments only. Also available via download from antivirus.k-state.edu. This software must be removed from your computer when you leave K-State.

Anti-adware, anti-spyware

• Spybot (v. 1.4) — Software used to detect and remove spyware, unwanted bots, and third-party adware.
• Windows Defender — Designed to prevent, remove and quarantine spyware.
• Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool — Scan and remove malicious software, including viruses and trojans.

Audio editor

• Audacity (v 1.2.6) — Digital audio editor.

Browsers (web)

• Internet Explorer (v 7) — Microsoft web browser.
• Firefox (v 2.0.0.14) — Mozilla web browser.
• Safari (v 3.1.1) — Apple web browser.

Oracle Calendar

• Oracle Calendar (v 10.1.1) — Used to manage departmental resources and for scheduling appointments.

CD/DVD burning

• Deep Burner — to burn CDs and DVDs.

Dial-in software

• Dial-in software — Software for those using K-State as their Internet Service Provider. See K-State's dial-in page for more information.

Disk (secured)

• True Crypt (v 4.3a)— Can create an encrypted, password-protected volume with its own file system, contained within a regular file.

E-mail programs

• Pegasus Mail (v 4.21c) — E-mail client.
• Thunderbird (v 2.0.0.12) — Cross-platform e-mail client.

File compression/decompression

• WinRAR (v 3.7.1) — Used to archive files into a single, extractable file.
• Winzip (v 9) — A zip program that processes RAR and Zip files.

File Transfer Program (secured)

• WinSCP (v 3.6.6) — A secure FTP program to access remote computers.

Java client

• Java (v 6) — Cross platform computer language that many modern computer applications and web applets are written in.

Media players

• iTunes (v 7.6) — Used for playing and organizing digital music.
• Quick Time (v 7.4.5) — Used to listen to many different audio formats and to watch several video formats.
• Real Player (v 11) — Used to listen to streaming media from the Internet.
• VLC (v 0.8.6d) — Used for various audio and video formats.
• Windows Media Player (v 11) — Used to play music and video of many different file types.

PDF reader

• Acrobat Reader (v 8.1.2) — Software used to read Acrobat PDF files.

Photo/picture viewer

• Picasa (v 2.7) — Used to organize and edit digital photos.

Security updates

• Windows Security Updates — The most current, critical updates for Windows 2000, XP and Vista. These can be updated from the Microsoft website. (Click on your PC's Start button | All programs | Windows Update, or open Internet Explorer and click on Tools | Windows Update.

System terminal

• Putty (v 0.60) — Software used to sign in to K-State's central Unix system securely.
• TCP3270 (v 3.14) (KSUVM) — A terminal-emulator program for accessing the KSUVM system.

X Windows system

• XMing (v 6.9) — An emulator for the X Windows System that makes the PC interface similar to a Sun workstation.

Word processor

• Open Office (v 2.4.0) — Office suite that is comparable to Microsoft Office.
• Microsoft Office 2007 Converter — Used to exchange documents between Microsoft Office 2007 and previous versions of Microsoft Office.

• Symantec Antivirus — Antivirus software for use on campus and home computers, plus the most current virus definitions. Restricted to use by K-State students, employees, and departments only. Also available via download from antivirus.k-state.edu.
• Symantec Virus Update — Update the virus definitions.
• Live Update (4.0.1.4) — Update the live update application.

Browsers (web)

• Firefox (v 2.0.0.14)) — Mozilla web browser.
• Sea Monkey (v 1.1.9) — Mozilla web browser with e-mail client.

Documentation

• Apple Mail — Apple mail client.
• Firefox (PDF) — Mozilla web broswer.
