The mission of the Kansas State University Herbarium is to:

  • document plant diversity over space and time, and preserve specimen resources into the future;
  • facilitate basic and applied collections-based research (taxonomic, floristic and other);
  • enhance teaching of plant systematics;
  • serve as a source of plant taxonomic information to applied workers and the general public.

The Herbarium has a focus on the flora of the central Great Plains, and use of the research facility to advance our understanding of regional biodiversity is encouraged.

  • The vast majority of KSC specimens have been databased! See the Databases page for information and access. Databasing has been supported primarily by the National Science Foundation (DBI-0544980).

  • The Herbarium is part of a new web portal at KSU, the K-State Biodiversity Information System (BiodIS). BiodIS is a collaborative between the Herbarium, the Museum for Entomological and Prairie Arthropod Research and Hale Libraries, and is supported by a K-State Targeted Excellence award through the Office of the Provost.
