Meet the Governmental Relations Staff

Sue Peterson makes the Statehouse home during the 90-day Kansas Legislative sessions each year for intense dawn-to-dusk work. Peterson serves as the Director of Governmental Relations at Kansas State University. Before coming to K-State, she was the Campaign Manager and Executive Assistant for Governmental Affairs to former Kansas Gov. Mike Hayden, Administrative Assistant to the speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives, Administrative Assistant to the majority leader of the Kansas House of Representatives, and Research and Political Director for the Kansas Republican Party. Her wide variety of expertise also qualified her to teach a course on "Kansas Politics and Government" at K-State. Peterson has veen a member of the K-State University Campus United Way Committee, the Riley County Court-Appointed Special Advocate Board, the Kaw Valley Girl Scout Council Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees for the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program, the Manhattan Rotary Club, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and the Taxation Bureau. She has also been a member of the Executive Committee of the Kansas Republican Party, the Capitol City Young Republicans and a delegation aide for Kansas during the Republican National Convention in 1988. Peterson received her bachelor's degree in history and political science from K-State and her master's degree in public administration from the University of Kansas. She has been in her current position, advising the President of K-State on political issues pertaining to the University, since 1989.

Phillip Harner

Phillip Harner serves as Sue Peterson's Legislative Assistant in the Office of the President. A senior at K-State, Phillip will graduate in May 2011 with a major in Industrial Engineering, with focuses on Statistical Process Control and Economic Analysis. Throughout his time at K-State, he has been involved in a number of leadership positions, including serving as the coordinator for the 2010 Week of Welcome, Co-Chair of the 2010-2011 K-State Proud Campaign, a member of Blue Key Senior Honorary, a summer Orientation Leader in 2008 and 2009, a volunteer campus tour guide, and others. During the summers of 2008 and 2009 he worked as an intern in Budapest, Hungary, and worked for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company as a Quality Assurance Engineer during the summer of 2010.

Megan Umscheid is currently serving as Project Coordinator for the Office of the President and directly assisting Dr. Sue Peterson. Megan completed her undergraduate coursework in Elementary Education at K-State in 2008. She completed her Masters degree with Baker University in 2010. Megan coordinates with Dr. Peterson and the Federal Relations committee to produce the annual Federal Initiatives book, containing Congressionally Directed Requests submitted by faculty and professional staff of the Unviersity. She also coordinates special projects for Governmental Relations and serves on the 8020 University Committee on Governmental Issues.
