Committee Application

Student Life Assessment Committee

Committee Chair: Bill Harlan, bharlan@k-state.edu

The Student Life Assessment Committee reports to and receives direction from Assistant Vice President for Student Life on matters relating to the assessment of programmatic and student learning outcomes in the Division of Student Life in an effort to promote a culture of assessment within Student Life. Specific charges include:
  1. Provide leadership and support for departments in their assessment efforts
  2. Provide training opportunities and educate Student Life personnel on assessment
  3. Facilitate communication and alignment
  4. Complete annual assessment reviews
  5. Ensure assessment efforts align with campus strategic plan and division priorities
Functions and Responsibilities
  1. Provide leadership and support to assessment initiatives and assist Student Life departments in gaining a greater understanding of effective assessment practices.
    1. Consult with departments on assessment projects, and annual plans & reports.
    2. Develop best practices, standards, guidelines and tools for assessment
    3. Provide feedback to departments to enable continued improvement in the   undertaking of quality assessment.
    4. Annually review the divisional assessment processes to improve and strengthen the departments' capabilities to undertake assessment.
    5. Help infuse a culture of evidence-based decision-making throughout the division
  2. Provide professional development training opportunities related to assessment and program evaluation.
    1. Determine type, level, and frequency of training for Student Life staff.
    2. Share assessment ideas and develop expertise on ways to improve student learning.
  3. Facilitate communication and alignment of divisional and department assessment and evaluation efforts throughout the Division and across the University.
    1. Maintain a calendar to coordinate and streamline assessment projects.
    2. Provide regular updates to departments regarding timelines.
    3. Maintain Student Life Assessment website:
      1. Student Life Assessment Committee members
      2. Student Life Assessment Committee meeting minutes
      3. Department Highlights Reports
      4. Assessment updates
    4. Conduct update/brainstorming meeting once a semester for directors, assessment contacts in each department, and other interested parties to include:
      1. Progress made and future initiatives from committee members
      2. Feedback and input from attendees
    5. Coordinate with the K-State Office of Assessment and represent Student Life on any appropriate University-Wide Assessment Committee(s).
  4. Complete annual assessment reviews of student learning outcomes on a rotating cycle in accordance with the University assessment plan.
  5. Ensure assessment efforts align with campus strategic plan and division priorities.

Student Life Graduate Assistant Development Committee

Committee Chair: Dr. Kevin Cook, kcook@k-state.edu

The Student Life GA Development committee reports to and receives direction from Assistant Vice President for Student Life on matters relating to GA recruitment, development, and retention within the Division of Student Life.  Specific charges include:
  1. Develop a systematic system for GA recruitment across the Division.
  2. Develop and promote professional development opportunities for graduate students in the Division.
  3. Ensure access and equity of professional development opportunities among graduate students working in the Division.
Functions and Responsibilities
  1. Determine a systematic system for GA recruitment across the Division.
    1. Coordinate GA visit day(s) in collaboration with campus partners and Student Life departments; include on-campus interview matching
    2. Develop a plan to standardize how, where, and when GA positions are posted within the Division
    3. Create a system (electronically or otherwise) to connect newly enrolled graduate students to the graduate assistant opportunities within the division (on a rolling basis).
  2. Develop and promote professional development opportunities for SL graduate students.
    1. Communicate with HESA leaders and the Graduate School to promote professional development opportunities and determine graduate student needs
    2. Develop professional development activities specific to graduate students and/or promote existing professional development to graduate students within the Division.
  3. Ensure access and equity of professional development opportunities among graduate students working in the Division.
    1. Distribute professional development funding to graduate students working in the Division
    2. Determine methods to check-in with graduate students on an annual basis to learn about their experiences
  4. Maintain Student Life GA Development website including:
    1. Committee members
    2. Committee meeting minutes
    3. Highlights and reports
    4. Event schedule for campus visit day
    5. Links to student life job portal.

Student Life Marketing and Communications Committee

Committee Chair: Alex Abendschein, abenda31@k-state.edu

The Student Life Marketing & Communications Committee reports to and receives direction from Assistant Vice President for Student Life on matters relating to the marketing and communication efforts to promote Student Life. Specific charges include:
  1. Enhance students' experience and increase student awareness of student life offerings at K-State by making it easier for them to find and understand what resources and programs are available.
  2. Increase awareness and knowledge of services offered by the division among all campus constituents.
  3. Brainstorm innovative and creative marketing ideas for programs and events that meet the needs of today's students.
  4. Identify potential opportunities for marketing collaboration between units.
  5. Develop a marketing plan — a marketing framework designed to enable and inform the marketing strategy for both the Division and each unit.
  6. Incorporate a social media strategy for the Division and each unit to follow.
Functions and Responsibilities
  1. Enhance students' experience and increase student awareness of student life offerings at K-State by making it easier for them to find and understand what resources and programs are available.
    1. Establish best practices for marketing opportunities and resources across student life and for specific marketing practices related to:
      1. Print marketing
      2. Electronic marketing

    1. Coordinate strategy for disseminating marketing resources to key areas such as academic advisors and academic units
  3. Brainstorm innovative and creative marketing ideas for programs and events that meet the needs of today's students.
    1. Assess students’ awareness and preferences for marketing and communications at least annually to maintain and update marketing strategies across the division
    2. Serve as the sounding board and resource for marketing and communications technology adoption
    3. Conduct update/brainstorming meeting once a semester for directors, marketing/communications contacts in each department, and other interested parties to include:
      1. Progress made and future initiatives from committee members
      2. Feedback and input from attendees

Student Life Professional Development Committee

Committee Chair: Julie Gibbs, juliegibbs@k-state.edu

The Student Life Professional Development Committee is responsible for providing opportunities and resources which promote the development of professional and personal growth for the Student Life staff members by:
  1. Creating professional development opportunities for staff
  2. Identifying and addressing issues and/or current topics of interest to student affairs staff members
  3. Facilitating the exchange of information and resources through programs, website, and workshops
Functions and Responsibilities
The Professional Development Committee creates and sustains the professional growth of staff through comprehensive programs and events that provide necessary skill development, promote professional growth, address staff and student needs, campus concerns, and national trends/issues. This committee is supported by the Assistant Vice President for Student Life. These learning experiences support the strategic goals of the institution and further the training provided within each of the departments of the Division of Student Life at Kansas State University.
  1. Provide professional development opportunities for Division of Student Life staff to participate in educational trainings and activities to provide intentional content on best practices and trends within the profession. This will include:
    1. Facilitate trainings focused on social justice, inclusion, and self awareness around identity based issues at least once per semester
    2. Implement an in-service or one day conference on current trends, priorities, and departmental expectations within Student Affairs on an annual basis
    3. Host a monthly “Lunch and Learn” series for offices within the division to present on various topics to promote collaboration and provide a better understanding of those offices’ purpose
    4. Manage Professional Development website and other digital resources that provide information about conference participation and associations, relevant division information, and staff recognition
    5. Create opportunities for staff to interact with upper level administrators regarding the state of the division, university, and community through the Student Life Breakfast or Lunch with the President and/or other cabinet members
  2. Advance the profession through pioneering best practices to become role models for student affairs as a whole.
    1. Implement an onboarding program to introduce new staff to the Student Life community, culture, and processes
    2. Host Careers in Student Affairs Month programs for interested students and staff to learn how to become a professional within this field
    3. Administer accessible evaluation models to continually create divisional services that meet the needs of staff
    4. Encourage participation at conferences (on campus, regionally or nationally) to build competencies around leadership development, professional growth and networking
    5. Accept and develop new programs that promote innovation, collaboration, and division-wide growth by administering staff surveys and contacting the professional development committee representative from respective offices
    6. Promote shared university-wide professional memberships (such as NASPA)

Student Life Staff Engagement Committee

Committee Chair: Dr. Wendy Barnes, wdb3838@k-state.edu
Create opportunities for the Division of Student Life to engage in social activities together to increase and sustain a culture of community, vibrancy, and celebration. Supported by the Assistant Vice President for Student Life. Specific charges include:
  1. Planning and implementing a new staff orientation program.
  2. Recognizing the outstanding accomplishments and exemplary efforts of Student Life staff members who contribute to the improvement of the quality of student life at Kansas State University.
  3. Provide personal development by creating programs and incentives to increase social interactions, build community, and acknowledge exceptional contributions to Kansas State University.
Functions and Responsibilities
  1. Invite departments from the campus community to present on various topics that educate staff on resources, trainings, and connections that support employee’s overall personal well-being
  2. Host events and activities that promote community, campus spirit and social interactions such as social hours, divisional outings, and friendly division-wide competitions
  3. Recognize staff members’ achievements through the employee of the month process and annual Student Life Awards Banquet
